Atlanta Chapter Launches Centenary Fund Raising Campaign
On Saturday, October 22, 2011, the Calabar Old Boys Association Atlanta Chapter, Inc. had its official launch of the Centenary Campaign. The function was held at the Benson Senior Complex in Sandy Springs. In attendance were 22 Old Boys and their spouses, as well as special guests. Also in attendance was a former headmaster, Mr. Arthur Edgar. Mingling with the crowd were Calabar Old Boy Kenneth Brown and his wife Jennifer, who both taught at Calabar.
The organizer of the event and Master of Ceremonies for the evening was Carlton Hopkins –‘65.
The gathering of alumni and friends was treated to fine Caribbean music by Roger Knights, whose handling of the steel drums was extraordinary and the music was soothing to the ear.
The event was catered by Partyculars, who provided a variety of delicious Jamaican and American hors-d'oeuvres.
The attendees were welcomed by COBA Atlanta President, David Anderson, M.D. –‘74, who reminded them of the greatness of Calabar as evidenced by the numerous names on the plaques decorating the walls of the chapel, and challenged them to help restore that greatness.
A touching audio and visual presentation was then put on by John-Paul Clarke, ScD –‘85 and Kevin Young, MArch –‘85, highlighting Calabar’s past glory, showing the present state of the infrastructure and presenting a vision of what the school will look like in the near future, with the help of the Old Boys. During the presentation, brochures containing information covered in the presentation were handed out to all present. Brochures were also sent to sixty old boys who were not present as well as to each chapter for distribution to its members.
The affair was a rallying call to action to all Old Boys to come to the aid of the school. The evening ended with the Old Boys singing all the verses of the school song, and they all left with the refrain - “Here Sir! Here Sir! Here Sir! Here Sir!” ringing in their ears.
Who will answer the call?
You Sir?
